Early intervention: raising attendance in primary schools
Q. We have a young carer in our school who sometimes needs time off to look after his mother. Do these sessions have to be recorded as absences?
Q. We have a child on our roll who hasn’t attended for over five months. The local authority knows about them and social care are involved. Can we remove them from the admission register?
Q. Can we take a child off roll and then put them back on again, instead of treating their temporary absence overseas as a ‘holiday’?
Q. Can we vary the dates of our school terms and the number of days we open? We’d like to avoid at least some of the peak holiday times to encourage parents not to take their children away in term time.
Q. We have a pupil with serious health issues who keeps having time in hospital. All her absence is authorised, so it seems very unfair that she is classed as a ‘persistent absentee’. Can we do anything about it?
