How can schools help young carers?

There will be young people in your school who are acting in a caring capacity for a parent or sibling. Suzanne O’Connell shows signs you can look out for and what special arrangements schools can make to help them.

Case studies/best practice Q&As

Q. We’re a C of E school and some parents want to keep their children off when we’re celebrating a Christian festival or attending a church service. Should this be authorised?

A. This is a question which the attendance regulations and DfE guidance don’t really recognise. We know that parents have always been entitled to authorised absence when a festival of their own religion falls on a school day. That was traditionally only meant to cover Ascension Day or Corpus Christi as other Christian festivals all fell in school holidays anyway. It now mostly involves Eid when academies and free schools could close if they wish to.
